Prompt questions for your production blog

Week 1:
o How are the Foundation Portfolio and Advanced Portfolio linked?
o How are the Advance Portfolio coursework and Critical Perspectives exam linked (same/different & progression)?
o What will you be recording in your Production Blog and how will it help you now & later – make links to G325?

Week 2:
o What was your initial response to the production Briefs?
o What was the process that you undertook to evaluate the given production Briefs?
o Creating your shortlist: what was your decision and why?
o What initial research have you undertake to enable you to make your decision?

Initial Proposal

Purpose: to decide upon the Brief you wish to complete and plan the next stage of research

After having considered ALL 13 Briefs thoughtfully you will have:
• formulated a shortlist of options
• undertaken some basic research into the viability of the Brief
• undertaken some basic research (form, content, style) into the nature of each of the elements of production

The next stage is to plan the work you will need to do in advance of the production stage:
• Select a range (minm. 3) of real texts to deconstruct for each of the production elements
• Identify any technical elements that need to be researched/experimented with

In this initial proposal you must:

• State clearly the brief you wish to complete
• Explain why you have selected this brief
• Explain what each of the elements of your selected brief will involve
• Discuss your initial thoughts about the genre/content/style – what you plan to make?
• Identify (name) your key texts (minm. 3) to be studied for research analysis
• Identify any areas for technical research/experimentation
• Create a timetable (tasks & completion dates) for your research and experimentation

THIS DOCUMENT WILL FORM PART OF YOUR FINAL ASSESSMENT!

EXEMPLAR OF INITIAL PROPOSAL

For my A2 Advanced Portfolio I plan to create a response to Brief 2:
A promotion package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer, together with two of the following three options:
• a website homepage for the film;
• a film magazine front cover, featuring the film;
• a poster for the film.
I will be working with two other students (name 1 & name 2) and we plan to all contribute to each element.

We have chosen this brief as we produced a reasonably successful video product at AS and hope to capitalize on this experience.
The combination of trailer, poster and magazine will offer the opportunity to create a recognizable brand identity and explore a range of cross media marketing techniques.

The other video briefs did interest me but I decided that the institutional context of a trailer, as opposed to a short film, offers a secure, more easily definable range of expectations in terms of target audience, genre, format, content and style.

We are thinking of creating a psychological horror trailer. To do this effectively we will need to undertake a range of research into similar products.
With that in mind we plan to examine products relating to:
The Ring, Sixth Sense and The Blair Witch
We will undertake deconstruction analysis to assess the codes & conventions (expectations) for our own products:
genre; fomat; content; style; narrative (themes / plot / characters); mise-en-scene; camera; light; sound; editing/design
In addition to these we will review a range other products as our planning develops.

Having begun our analytical research we will also undertake some preliminary planning and experimentation.

Timetable
Wed 7th July: Submit Initial Proposal

Practice with equipment - cameras
Sept week 1 Write up research: complete analysis grids
Sept week 2 Create Full Proposal: codes & conventions of format/content/style and audience profile for all 3 products
Mon 20th Sept: Submit Full Proposal

Production Research

Following your Initial Proposal you will have identified a minimum of 3 texts for EACH product.

The next job is to produce evidence of detailed, in-depth research.

We are doing this to:

produce evidence for assessment
ensure that you fully understand the nature of the product that you are planning to create
to collate the information needed for your FULL PROPOSAL

Access 'Practical Production Research' on school network: Pupilshare/A2 Media2010_11

Produce ONE grid for EACH element of EACH text

For my A2 Advanced Portfolio I plan to create a response to Brief 10:

A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:

> a poster for the film

> a radio trailer for the film

>a film magazine review page featuring the film.

I will be working with two other students Will Darbyshire and Joe East and we plan to all contribute to each element.

We have chosen this brief as we produced a reasonably successful video product at AS and hope to capitalize on this experience.
The combination of trailer, poster and magazine will offer the opportunity to create a recognizable brand identity and explore a range of cross media marketing techniques.

The other video briefs did interest me but I decided that the institutional context of a short film, as opposed to a trailer, offers a secure, more easily definable range of expectations in terms of target audience, genre, format, content and style.

We are thinking of creating a short film drama To do this effectively we will need to undertake a range of research into similar products.
With that in mind we plan the research three short films: Virus, When time stands still and The Black Hole. On top of this we are also using two full length feature films for research, these are Click and Clockstoppers. We will undertake deconstruction analysis to assess the codes & conventions (expectations) for our own products:

genre; fomat; content; style; narrative (themes / plot / characters); mise-en-scene; camera; light; sound; editing/design
In addition to these we will review a range of other products as our planning develops. These include a trailer by Philips called Carousel and other short films.

Having begun our analytical research we will also undertake some preliminary planning and experimentation. In this way we can improve and perfect the technique that we are planning on using to convey the necessary effects of time stopping.

I will be completing brief number 8 and will therefore be designing the first two pages of a new local newspaper, along with a poster and a radio advertisement. I have selected this brief, as I produced a music magazine for AS project and gained valuable experience that will help me in this task. Furthermore I believe it will be a challenge, to make a local newspaper seem appealing to a wider readership; currently, the vast majority appear to be aimed at the older generation and have a loyal but niche target audience. I would like to develop a piece of media that informs people of local news and events whilst encouraging a younger, perhaps more affluent readership.
This brief will enable me to develop a strong recognisable brand and identity across a number of media. There were a number of other briefs that I liked, however the production and associated advertising of a newspaper plays more to my previously gained knowledge and natural interest.
I am thinking of creating a weekly newspaper, in order to do this I will need to conduct some research into similar products this will include buying a variety of local newspapers to compare but also have a look in the local newspapers to see what other publications are on offer for families and over 50s.
I will undertake deconstruction analysis to assess the codes and conventions (expectations) for my own product:, format, content, style and sound. It will be difficult to review posters and radio adverts for a local newspaper because they don’t exist however this makes the brief more interesting as it enables me to explore increasing circulation through unconventional media.
